Title: California’s New Initiatives to Manage Growth and Reduce Environmental Impacts
California has enacted legislation that commits the state to greenhouse gas reductions, mandates new transportation fuels and more efficient vehicles, and calls upon metropolitan regions and local governments to develop "Sustainable Community Strategies" to reduce travel demand through coordinated land use and transportation planning, infill development, higher densities, and a greater emphasis on transit and non-motorized modes. The legislation has set in motion a round of debates over the technical analyses underlying the strategies and the feasibility and acceptability of proposed changes. This presentation will touch on the negotiations with the federal government, auto manufacturers and fuel producers, but will focus on the technical, institutional, and political aspects of local-regional-state land use and transportation policy.
