Title: Variable Speed Limits
Abstract: The Florida Department of Transportation has been experimenting with unconventional methods to improve capacity along congested interstates. One of the latest experiments involved modifying traditional intelligent transportation system (ITS) elements to develop a variable speed limit system along I-4 in Orlando. In this scenario, variable speed limits were introduced to improve roadway capacity during daily congestion patterns. This presentation will provide an overview of the system, a taste of the theories related to congestion, and visually show the operator interface with the algorithms that recommend changes to the speed limits.
Other topics that will be addressed deal with the human factors of traffic engineering. How do you educate a population without an advertising budget? How do you get other local agencies (such as law enforcement) to participate? How do you get the local media to support your project?
