Kelvin Cheu, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, UT - El Paso

Dr. Kelvin Cheu is currently an associate professor with the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). He is heading the Border Intermodal Gateway (BIG) Transportation Laboratory (http://www.utep.edu/biglab).

Dr. Cheu earned his Ph.D. degree in Transportation Systems Engineering at the University of California at Irvine in 1994. From 1994 to 2006, he was a faculty with the Department of Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr. Cheu's research interests and expertise include traffic operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), public and intermodal transportation, transportation logistics and transportation security. He has extensive experience in the applications of traffic simulation models, artificial intelligence techniques, GPS and GIS in transportation.

Dr. Cheu has published more than 45 papers in international peer reviewed journals. He is a member of editorial advisory board of Transportation Research Part C and Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. With this vast research experience, he is frequently invited to review papers in 12 international journals and many other conferences. He is a member of two TRB committees: Critical Transportation Infrastructure Protection (ABE40) and New Public Transportation Systems and Technology (AP020). From August 2009, he will coordinate the paper review of TRB ABE40 committee. Dr. Cheu is a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas.
