Dr. Nagui M. Rouphail currently serves as Director of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University, a post he has held since January 2002. ITRE is an inter-institutional research center of the University of North Carolina system that employs 45+ full-time staff in addition to supporting many undergraduate and graduate students. ITRE has recent annual research expenditures nearing $9.0 million across programs in Highway Systems, Public Transportation, Pupil Transportation and Visual Analytics Modeling and Simulation. ITRE is also host to two federally funded centers on Transportation and the Environment, and the Local Transportation Assistance Program. Dr. Rouphail also holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at NC State University. Previously, he served as assistant and associate professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago

Dr. Rouphail is an internationally recognized scholar in highway capacity and operations, traffic simulation and intelligent transport systems, and the interface of traffic flow and vehicle emissions. During his 28+ year academic career he has chaired theses and dissertation committees for over fifty graduate students, of which 17 have successfully completed their doctoral degrees. He has published nearly one-hundred refereed journal articles, and generated over $6.0 M in external research support. Funding for Dr. Rouphail's research program has come from a variety of sources including NSF, NCHRP, SHRP-II, FHWA, EPA, NIH and the Illinois and North Carolina Departments of Transportation. Dr. Rouphail served as a member of the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service (HCQS) and had leadership roles in both ITE and ASCE technical committees. He was a major research contributor to several chapters in the 2000 Highway Capacity Manual. He is also the lead author of the Signalized Intersection chapter in the Traffic Flow Theory Monograph published online by FHWA.

Dr. Rouphail was the sole author of a chapter on Traffic Congestion Management in the recent Handbook on Environmentally Conscious Transportation published by John Wiley and Sons. He served as Associate Editor for several transportation journals including Transportation Science, Transportation Research and the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems.

Dr. Rouphail has carried out international collaborative research with the Danish Road Directorate in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Royal Technical Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Seoul National University in South Korea, the Australian Road Research Board in Melbourne, Australia and at both Instituto Superior Tecnico, Lisbon and the University of Aveiro in Portugal.

Dr. Rouphail received his BS in Civil Engineering from Cairo University in 1972, and his M.S. and PhD from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1977 and 1981, respectively.
